You are invited to join Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church and Church of All Nations for a series of three workshops called “Jubilee Pathways.” We encourage you to come to all three workshops as they build on each other, though you are welcome to participate even if you can only make one or two classes.

We hope that workshop participants will walk away with:

  • Grounding in fresh interpretations of biblical texts that root us in our call to seek restorative, regenerative ways of living on the land

  • Renewed imagination and practical insights for growing food and medicinal plants, using permaculture principles, as a way of healing and repair for earth, self, and community

  • A clear analysis of how colonization and capitalism have broken our relationship with land

  • Connections with other people of faith who dream of building a just, liveable future through healing our relationship to land

Workshop Overview

We will meet three weeks in a row on Tuesday nights from 6:30 – 8:30pm on Zoom. A Zoom link will be sent to you upon registration.

January 26: Church of All Nations’ Journey: Expanding the Circle of Kinship

February 2: Creation’s Revolt: Broken Relations & the Climate Crisis

February 9: Jubilee Pathways: Healing Our Relation to Land

Humanity’s future is in question today as we confront the cascading eco-disasters of late stage capitalism: global warming, rising oceans, destruction of local habitats, species extinction, degraded soil, polluted waters, and political and economic disruptions fueled by these seismic shifts. How can the church truly engage this reality when we have inherited a colonial faith abstracted from ecological concerns? Are we ready to repent from the objectification of creation responsible for these disasters and relearn to relate as kin?

Through this workshop series we will discuss the history leading to these disconnects in the West and explore a pathway forward grounded in the biblical tradition of jubilee. We will discover how the Bible, contrary to its colonial interpretation, is a rich and powerful resource for learning to root our faith in an interdependent, cooperative, even restorative way within our local ecosystem. The principles and practices of permaculture will offer tools to congregations desiring to tangibly participate in the earth’s healing during this era of climate crisis. The intersection of jubilee and permaculture offer fruitful pathways for restoring our relationship to land.

Laura Newby and John Nelson are pastoral staff at Church of All Nations (CAN) and co-founders of Underground Seminary. CAN is a diverse congregation grounded in the Bible and shaped by the interwoven experiences of their immigrant, indigenous, POC and white American members. Laura and John will share CAN’s journey of expanding their circle of kinship to include the land they inhabit, which has led to a total revamp of their church grounds using the principles of permaculture. They hope their congregation’s journey can support other churches who feel called to this work.

Jubilee Pathways is sponsored by Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church (OSLC) in Minneapolis. OSLC is on a journey of living out their Christ-centered mission through dismantling white supremacy, deepening their engagement with their neighbors, and engaging in climate justice and creation care. On that journey, the church has been growing in its partnership with the 24th Street Urban Farms Coalition*, a local group of mostly indigenous-led organizations that works to create and nurture the culture and practice of hyper-local food production, food sovereignty, healthy eating, healthy living and related activities. Through that partnership, Our Saviour’s has begun to invest significantly in an urban farm site just north of the church. The church is learning to grow food and medicinal plants through permaculture principles and other methods, seeking to co-create multicultural beloved community on the block in the process. OSLC thanks the Minneapolis Synod of the ELCA for a generous grant that supports us to do this work and share it with others.
